To Cap or Not to Cap?

To Cap or Not to Cap?
8 January, 2021

The very first dilemma for a new parent is answering the questions of should we or should we not. We attempt to answer all those confusing questions running in your mind with logic and reasoning. In this blog, we shall address the question should your newborn wear a cap or not?

Why does my baby need to wear a cap?

The major reason why it's essential for your newborn to wear a cap is that his/her head is bigger compared to the body. This results in more heat transfer, so a hat/cap prevents too much heating or cooling of the baby.

How to identify if your baby is cold or hot:

The task of identifying that your baby is cold or hot is just not difficult but also confusing. Experts say that the hands, feet and neck of the baby can be considered as good spots for cold. As we do not understand the meaning of the baby's cry, we have to try to decode their discomfort. They may also be fussy for no substantial reason. Once you have identified your baby is cold from the hand, feet or neck you must not ignore it. Babies do not have the sensory power to shiver like adults do when they are cold, instead they become quieter and still.

On the other hand, you have to ensure that you don’t overheat your baby, which can happen at any time of year. According to experts if your baby has a slight temperature, fast heartbeats, throws up or seems confused, then your baby may be in a hot environment. The heat in the boy and in the outside environment makes the baby feel uncomfortable.

Expert advice: Please note, an infant/newborn requires one more layer of clothing than an adult would wear at the same given temperature.

Example: If it's wintertime and you need a jacket and a shawl around your neck, the baby would probably need a shirt and a jacket to keep his/her body as warm as yours. Similarly, it's summertime and you are going through a heatwave, keeping the baby without any layers/ minimal layers will be a better idea.

Till when does my child need a cap?

Your newborn's head as mentioned earlier in this blog is proportionately bigger than the body and is also de-shapped. Some kids have a diamond-shaped head and some have an oval elongated head. Additionally, the head region of your newborn is tremendously soft compared to our coconut hard heads. Your newborn's head will start taking shape after six months from birth and can be completely formed by 18 months.

We recommend it's a good idea for you to cap your little one till he/she reaches 18 months old not only to avoid injuries and bruises on the head but also to maintain a standard and acceptable body temperature for your little angel.

We are hoping the question of “to cap or not to cap” is answered with this blog. There are many more generic critical questions we shall address in the upcoming blogs. If you have anything in mind, please feel free to ask. You can visit our website and glance through our caps collection online for your little one.

My baby is 4 months old. I always thought he is uncomfortable with his cap. But my mom-in-law always said the head should be covered. I alway asked why. She said that’s what her parents did. Now I know why. Thanks a lot for this information. Love reading your blogs.
